Breakfast in the Classroom

Studies conclude that students who eat school breakfast increase their math and reading scores as well as improve their speed and memory in cognitive tests. Research also shows that children who eat breakfast at school – closer to class and test-taking time – perform better on standardized tests than those who skip breakfast or eat breakfast at home.

Compared to children who do not eat breakfast or eat breakfast at home, children who eat school breakfast:

  • are less likely to be overweight,
  • have improved nutrition,
  • eat more fruits,
  • drink more milk,
  • consume a wider variety of foods.

Offering breakfast free to all students improves the learning environment for all students.
Schools that offer breakfast free to all students in the classroom report decreases in discipline, psychological problems, visits to school nurses and tardiness; increases in student attentiveness and attendance; and generally improved learning environments.

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Grant

Program Description: The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides children in participating elementary schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables. This is a competitive grant that must be applied for annually. The level of funds provided to any one school depends on the school's enrollment and the available funding provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Purpose: The purpose of the program is to expand and increase the variety and amount of fruits and vegetables children experience and consume. Combined with nutrition education and a reinforcement of healthful eating habits, the program emphasizes the long-term goals of positively influencing children's life-long eating habits and combating childhood obesity.

The Child Nutrition Program offers delicious and nutritious breakfasts and lunches at all of our schools.  Proper nutrition is important for academic success.

Our meals meet the new USDA Nutrition Standards, which requires the following:

  • Fruits offered at both breakfast and lunch
  • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and peas and beans
  • More whole grains
  • Fat-free and 1% milk choices
  • Age-appropriate calorie limits
